Description

Wrapped up in warm clothes, you’re enjoying a stroll on a cold winter afternoon, absorbing the beauty of nature all around you. You hear birdsong, the rustle of autumn’s final leaves as a gently chilling breeze undulates the branches of trees, the quiet cascade of water making its way into a nearby lake. Reaching the water’s edge you crouch down, remove your glove and put a finger in the slowly moving water. The cold hits instantly. Of course, you’re going to have a swim… Wait, what?!

The idea of immersing yourself in a body of cold water, willfully taking a cold shower or paying for whole body cryotherapy is sure to divide people. However, we now understand the incredible physical and mental health benefits of cold water. Study this course to discover these benefits and how to embrace cold water therapy safely. We hope you packed a swimming costume!

Beginning with its history, we’ll look at the discovery of cold water therapy (also known as cryotherapy) by ancient civilisations, its popularisation in the Victorian era, and how the world of sports came to use cryotherapy as the go-to remedy for injuries and contusions.

We’ll gain a clear idea of what our bodies can cope with when immersed in freezing temperatures and the biology of cold water therapy—namely how your body responds when shocked with a cold stimulus. You’ll learn the proven benefits of cold water therapy to both our physical and mental health and we’ll also discuss its drawbacks and risks, along with how to address some safety issues that may arise.

We’ll look at how you can carry out cold water therapy on yourself. With bespoke guides for each cryotherapy method, you will learn how to indulge safely and correctly. You’ll also learn about breathing and meditative techniques that will help you embrace the cold.

For a little inspiration, and to provide a greater understanding of what the human body is capable of and what cold therapy can do for us, the course concludes with a look at the life and works of extreme athlete Wim Hof. We’ll also study real-world case studies, to explore what cold water can do for you when applied correctly.

By studying this course, you will:

  • Be familiar with the history of cold water therapy
  • Understand the benefits and drawbacks of cold water therapy
  • Be aware of health and safety issues and how to address them
  • Learn various cold water therapy methods

Who is this course for?

If the idea of immersing yourself in a cold body of water heightens your adrenaline or you’d like to understand the health benefits of doing so, then the Cold Water Therapy Diploma Course is for you. You’ll learn about the positive effects of cold water on our physical and mental health and how you can safely explore this therapy.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
